Tools To Help Students' Review New Knowledge

The Posts that follow this introduction; are intended as a series of pathway tutorials for students to use as online review tutorials.

These tutorials should help them through several stages of developing capabilities in using "Living Curriculum" tools. (Typically based around Web 2.0 applications)

The following are some of these tools:

  • Gmail                (The facia to a large number of applications, such as those listed below)
  • Blogs;               (Web-logs, Journals, diaries, a place to store, sort, and show your learning journey)
  • Google Docs;   (Collaborative documents for tutor/peer feedback, presentations and support)
  • Buzz;                (Basically a lineal forum post using asynchronous messaging)
  • Chat;               (An online chat service that allows textual, audio, or full video live chatting. (like Skype)

My intention is to introduce the application being discussed with a video presentation designed to emulate the face to face delivery of the topic, (previously delivered during contact teaching sessions) allowing students to review step by step at a later time and a convenient location. e.g. Home, Student drop in centre, Internet cafe, etc...

A side benefit to this approach is it may encourage 'reflection on practice' by allowing  a convenient opportunity to practice and improve new skills / capabilities.

After each Face to Face introduction video, a video or series of videos capturing the computer desktop will guide students through processes required to start using the particular Web 2.0 apllication being discussed.
These video presentations will have some audio to help direct attention to the processes and the cursor movement should be articulated to also be easily followed.
Any lost steps can be simply replayed in the video.
